⚠️ Transcript issue: the recording for this date was lost — the raw transcript file in the archive is a duplicate of the 30 June recording. This summary is reconstructed from the class slides (materials/zahlen.pptx — Lektion 7 Zahlen, Part 1) and the recap at the start of the 3 July class. Source material for this session is thinner than most others.
Session goals
- Zahlen (numbers) — Kardinalzahlen vs Ordinalzahlen
- Ordinal endings
- Dates (der 6. März / am 6. März)
- Birthday sentence construction
- Numbers test on the web app
Topics covered
Kardinalzahlen vs Ordinalzahlen
| Type | What it is | Example |
| Kardinalzahlen | counting numbers — how many? | eins, zwei, drei… |
| Ordinalzahlen | order numbers — which position? | der/die/das erste, zweite, dritte… |
Ordinal numbers behave like adjectives and always come with der/die/das or am.
Building ordinal numbers
- 1–19: number + -te → zweite, vierte, neunzehnte. Irregular: erste (1.), dritte (3.), siebte (7.), achte (8.)
- 20 and up: number + -ste → zwanzigste, dreißigste, hundertste
- Written with a dot: der 6. März = der sechste März
Using ordinals with dates
| German | English |
| Heute ist der 6. (sechste) März. | Today is the 6th of March. |
| Sie kommt am 6. (sechsten) März. | She is coming on the 6th of March. |
| Ich wurde am 06.04. (sechsten Vierten) geboren. | I was born on 6 April. |
| Ich habe am sechsten April Geburtstag. | My birthday is on the 6th of April. |
| Das vierte Haus von links ist mein Haus. | The fourth house from the left is my house. |
Rule: after am the ordinal takes -n (am sechsten); after der it doesn't (der sechste).
