Was sind Verben? (Lektion 12, slide 2)
A verb describes an action or state. Sentence structure depends on the verb.
Verb structure
Infinitive = stem + -en (or -n). To conjugate: take the stem, add the personal ending.
| Infinitive | Stem | English |
|---|---|---|
| lernen | lern- | to learn |
| heißen | heiß- | to be called |
| kommen | komm- | to come |
| sprechen | sprech- | to speak |
| wohnen | wohn- | to live (reside) |
| machen | mach- | to do / make |
| hören | hör- | to hear / listen |
Mini recap — Part 2
- Verb = action or state · infinitive ends in -en
- Conjugation = stem + personal ending
Regular verbs (Regelmäßige Verben — slide 4)
Weak/regular verbs: the stem does not change — only the ending. These endings apply to regular verbs only (not strong verbs).
| Person | Ending | kommen → | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | komme | I come |
| du | -st | kommst | you come |
| er/sie/es | -t | kommt | he/she/it comes |
| wir | -en | kommen | we come |
| ihr | -t | kommt | you (pl.) come |
| sie/Sie | -en | kommen | they / You come |
Class drill — trinken, kommen, spielen (full tables)
| Person | trinken (to drink) | kommen (to come) | spielen (to play) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich (I) | trinke I drink | komme I come | spiele I play |
| du (you) | trinkst you drink | kommst you come | spielst you play |
| er/sie/es (he/she/it) | trinkt he/she/it drinks | kommt he/she/it comes | spielt he/she/it plays |
| wir (we) | trinken we drink | kommen we come | spielen we play |
| ihr (you pl.) | trinkt you (pl.) drink | kommt you (pl.) come | spielt you (pl.) play |
| sie/Sie (they / You formal) | trinken they / You drink | kommen they / You come | spielen they / You play |
Verb list from class — regular vs strong
| Verb | English | Type | ich form |
|---|---|---|---|
| leben | to live | regular | lebe |
| lieben | to love | regular | liebe |
| spielen | to play | regular | spiele |
| sagen | to say | regular | sage |
| besuchen | to visit | regular | besuche |
| trinken | to drink | regular | trinke |
| arbeiten | to work | regular (+ E-insert) | arbeite |
| lernen | to learn | regular | lerne |
| schreiben | to write | regular | schreibe |
| malen | to paint | regular | male |
| singen | to sing | regular | singe |
| rechnen | to calculate | regular | rechne |
| träumen | to dream | regular | träume |
| hören | to hear | regular | höre |
| gehen | to go | irregular | gehe → du gehst, er geht |
| schauen / anschauen | to look (at) | regular | schaue |
| essen | to eat | strong | esse → du isst |
| lesen | to read | strong | lese → du liest |
| sehen | to see | strong | sehe → du siehst |
Mini recap — Part 3
- Regular pattern: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en
- Same endings for trinken, kommen, spielen — only the stem changes
- Check the Type column before you conjugate
Special rule — stem ends in -s, -ß, -z (slide 4)
If the stem ends in s, ß, or z, du takes -t (not -st). Reason: the stem already has an s sound — adding -st would be awkward to pronounce.
| Infinitive | du form | English | Wrong ✗ |
|---|---|---|---|
| heißen | heißt | you are called | heißst |
| tanzen | tanzt | you dance | tanzst |
| sitzen | sitzt | you sit | sitzst |
Exam tip: Wie heißt du? — always -t for du, never *heißst.
Mini recap — Part 4
- Stem ends s / ß / z → du gets -t only
- heißen → heißt · tanzen → tanzt
leben vs lieben (from class)
These two verbs sound similar — learn them as a pair:
| Verb | English | ich | du | er/sie/es |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| leben | to live (reside) | lebe | lebst | lebt |
| lieben | to love | liebe | liebst | liebt |
| Sentence | English |
|---|---|
| Der Mann lebt in Paris. | The man lives in Paris. |
| Ich wohne in Berlin. | I live in Berlin. (also correct for “reside”) |
| Ich liebe Badminton. | I love badminton. |
| Ich liebe Programmieren. | I love programming. |
Note: For “where you live” in your intro, use wohnen or leben — both work with cities: Ich lebe in Berlin. / Ich wohne in Berlin.
Mini recap — Part 5
- leben = live · lieben = love
- Same endings (regular) — only the stem vowel differs: e vs ie
Strong verbs — stem vowel change (slides 9–10)
Starke Verben: stem vowel changes in du and er/sie/es only. ich, wir, ihr, sie keep the infinitive vowel.
fahren & brechen (slide 9)
| fahren (to drive) | brechen (to break) | |
|---|---|---|
| ich (I) | fahre I drive | breche I break |
| du (you) | fährst you drive | brichst you break |
| er/sie/es | fährt he/she/it drives | bricht he/she/it breaks |
| wir (we) | fahren we drive | brechen we break |
| ihr (you pl.) | fahrt you (pl.) drive | brecht you (pl.) break |
| sie/Sie | fahren they / You drive | brechen they / You break |
sprechen & treffen (A1 strong)
| sprechen (to speak) | treffen (to meet) | |
|---|---|---|
| ich (I) | spreche I speak | treffe I meet |
| du (you) | sprichst you speak | triffst you meet |
| er/sie/es | spricht he/she/it speaks | trifft he/she/it meets |
| wir (we) | sprechen we speak | treffen we meet |
Vowel change patterns (slide 10)
| Pattern | Example verb | du | er/sie/es | English |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| a → ä | fallen | fällst | fällt | to fall |
| au → äu | laufen | läufst | läuft | to run |
| e → i | nehmen | nimmst | nimmt | to take |
| e → ie | sehen | siehst | sieht | to see |
| e → i | essen | isst | isst | to eat |
| e → i | geben | gibst | gibt | to give |
| e → i | lesen | liest | liest | to read |
| o → ö | schlafen | schläfst | schläft | to sleep |
nehmen note: the h drops and m doubles → du nimmst, er nimmt.
A1 strong verbs — learn these pairs (du / er)
| Infinitive | du | er/sie/es | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| fahren | fährst | fährt | drive |
| essen | isst | isst | eat |
| lesen | liest | liest | read |
| sehen | siehst | sieht | see |
| geben | gibst | gibt | give |
| nehmen | nimmst | nimmt | take |
| schlafen | schläfst | schläft | sleep |
| sprechen | sprichst | spricht | speak |
| treffen | triffst | trifft | meet |
Mini recap — Part 6
- Vowel change only in du and er/sie/es
- Patterns: a→ä, au→äu, e→i, e→ie, o→ö
- Drill: say infinitive → du → er aloud
E-insertion (slides 11–12)
If stem ends in -d or -t, insert -e- before the ending — easier to pronounce.
| Verb (to …) | du | er/sie/es | English (du / er) |
|---|---|---|---|
| arbeiten (to work) | arbeitest | arbeitet | you work / he works |
| reiten (to ride) | reitest | reitet | you ride / he rides |
| halten (to hold / stop) | hältst (vowel change!) | hält | you hold / he holds |
Strong + -t stem: vowel changes and you do not double the t — lesen → du liest, er liest (not *liestt).
Mix both rules: arbeiten = regular + E-insert · lesen = strong vowel change + looks like E-insert but stem is lies-.
Mini recap — Part 7
- Stem ends -d / -t → often add -e-: arbeitest
- Strong verbs: vowel change first, then ending
