Mini recap — Part 1

  • Origin → Ich komme aus … · live → Ich wohne in …
  • Job → Ich arbeite als … or Ich bin …
  • Learn vocab in sentences, not word lists alone
Part 2

Was sind Verben? (Lektion 12, slide 2)

A verb describes an action or state. Sentence structure depends on the verb.

Verb structure

Infinitive = stem + -en (or -n). To conjugate: take the stem, add the personal ending.

InfinitiveStemEnglish
lernenlern-to learn
heißenheiß-to be called
kommenkomm-to come
sprechensprech-to speak
wohnenwohn-to live (reside)
machenmach-to do / make
hörenhör-to hear / listen

Mini recap — Part 2

  • Verb = action or state · infinitive ends in -en
  • Conjugation = stem + personal ending
Part 3

Regular verbs (Regelmäßige Verben — slide 4)

Weak/regular verbs: the stem does not change — only the ending. These endings apply to regular verbs only (not strong verbs).

PersonEndingkommen →English
ich-ekommeI come
du-stkommstyou come
er/sie/es-tkommthe/she/it comes
wir-enkommenwe come
ihr-tkommtyou (pl.) come

lesento readstronglese → du liest
sehento seestrongsehe → du siehst

Mini recap — Part 3

  • Regular pattern: -e, -st, -t, -en, -t, -en
  • Same endings for trinken, kommen, spielen — only the stem changes
  • Check the Type column before you conjugate
Part 4

Special rule — stem ends in -s, -ß, -z (slide 4)

If the stem ends in s, ß, or z, du takes -t (not -st). Reason: the stem already has an s sound — adding -st would be awkward to pronounce.

Infinitivedu formEnglishWrong ✗
heißenheißtyou are calledheißst
tanzentanztyou dancetanzst
sitzensitztyou sitsitzst

Exam tip: Wie heißt du? — always -t for du, never *heißst.

Mini recap — Part 4

  • Stem ends s / ß / z → du gets -t only
  • heißen → heißt · tanzen → tanzt
Part 5

leben vs lieben (from class)

These two verbs sound similar — learn them as a pair:

VerbEnglishichduer/sie/es
lebento live (reside)lebelebstlebt
liebento loveliebeliebstliebt
SentenceEnglish
Der Mann lebt in Paris. The man lives in Paris.
Ich wohne in Berlin.I live in Berlin. (also correct for “reside”)
Ich liebe Badminton.I love badminton.
Ich liebe Programmieren.I love programming.

Note: For “where you live” in your intro, use wohnen or leben — both work with cities: Ich lebe in Berlin. / Ich wohne in Berlin.

Mini recap — Part 5

  • leben = live · lieben = love
  • Same endings (regular) — only the stem vowel differs: e vs ie
Part 6

Strong verbs — stem vowel change (slides 9–10)

Starke Verben: stem vowel changes in du and er/sie/es only. ich, wir, ihr, sie keep the infinitive vowel.

fahren & brechen (slide 9)

fahren (to drive)brechen (to break)
ich (I)fahre
I drive

Vowel change patterns (slide 10)

PatternExample verbduer/sie/esEnglish
a → äfallenfällstfälltto fall
au → äulaufenläufstläuftto run
e → inehmennimmstnimmtto take
e → iesehensiehstsiehtto see
e → iessenisstisstto eat
e → igebengibstgibtto give
e → ilesenliestliestto read
o → öschlafenschläfstschläftto sleep

nehmen note: the h drops and m doubles → du nimmst, er nimmt.

A1 strong verbs — learn these pairs (du / er)

Infinitiveduer/sie/esEnglish
fahrenfährstfährtdrive
essenisstissteat
lesenliestliestread
sehensiehstsiehtsee
gebengibstgibtgive
nehmennimmstnimmttake
schlafenschläfstschläftsleep
sprechensprichstsprichtspeak
treffentriffsttrifftmeet

Mini recap — Part 6

  • Vowel change only in du and er/sie/es
  • Patterns: a→ä, au→äu, e→i, e→ie, o→ö
  • Drill: say infinitive → du → er aloud
Part 7

E-insertion (slides 11–12)

If stem ends in -d or -t, insert -e- before the ending — easier to pronounce.

Verb (to …)duer/sie/esEnglish (du / er)
arbeiten (to work)arbeitestarbeitetyou work / he works
reiten (to ride)reitestreitetyou ride / he rides
halten (to hold / stop)hältst (vowel change!)hältyou hold / he holds

Strong + -t stem: vowel changes and you do not double the t — lesen → du liest, er liest (not *liestt).

Mix both rules: arbeiten = regular + E-insert · lesen = strong vowel change + looks like E-insert but stem is lies-.

Mini recap — Part 7

  • Stem ends -d / -t → often add -e-: arbeitest
  • Strong verbs: vowel change first, then ending
Part 8

sein — to be (memorize all 6 forms)

PersonFormEnglishSay
ichbinI ambin
dubistyou arebist
er/sie/esisthe/she/it isist
wirsindwe arezint
ihrseidyou (pl.) arezait
sie/Siesindthey are / You are (formal)zint
