Part 1 · Time vocabulary — the chain

Learn it as one story: a week has 7 days → a day has 24 hours → an hour has 60 minutes → a minute has 60 seconds.

Uhr vs Stunde: Uhr = the clock / o'clock point (um 8 Uhr). Stunde = a duration of 60 minutes (Der Film dauert zwei Stunden). English "hour" covers both — German splits them.

What time is it? (both are fine — answer: Es ist…)

Part 2 · Official time (24h) — pure math, no traps

Pattern: Es ist + hour + Uhr + minutes. Read the digits, done. Used in announcements, timetables, TV, and the exam listening section.

Remember: two-digit minutes still read backwards — 45 = fünfundvierzig (five-and-forty).

Part 3 · Everyday time — nach and vor

Plain English: nach = past (after the hour) · vor = to (before the next hour) · Viertel = quarter (15 min). Uses the 12-hour clock.

Part 4 · The halb trap — the #1 confusion of this class

You struggled with this in class — read twice. German halb does NOT mean “half past”. It means “halfway TO the next hour”. halb drei = halfway to three = 2:30, not 3:30!

2:30 → Es ist halb drei.

Think: “half of the way to 3”.

6:30 → Es ist halb sieben.

Halfway to 7.

The 2-step hack: see :30 → ① ignore the current hour, ② say halb + the NEXT hour. 10:30 → next hour 11 → halb elf.

The 25–35 minute window anchors on halb

Part 5 · “Almost” expressions — kurz, fast, gleich

4:58	Es ist fast fünf. / Es ist gleich fünf.	it's almost 5 / it's about to be 5
5:03	Es ist kurz nach fünf.	shortly after 5

Use these to escape: if the exact minutes are awkward (like :58 or :03), Germans just say kurz vor/nach — you can too.

Part 6 · Accusative case — first introduction (end of class)

Plain English: the last 10 minutes introduced the accusative: when a noun is the direct object (the thing being had/eaten/seen), the masculine article changes: der → den, ein → einen. Feminine, neuter, plural: unchanged. The full topic was taught next session.

Sara hat einen Bruder.

Sara has a brother. — Sara = subject (nominative), brother = object (accusative)

Question words: subject answers Wer? (who?), accusative object answers Wen? (whom?) or Was? (what?). Full lesson in Session 8.
