Topic test 4 — Separable verbs & imperative
Verbs that split in two, and how to give instructions
Separable verbs break apart in a normal sentence: the prefix jumps to the end.

Separable verbs
Some verbs have a small word stuck to the front: an, auf, aus, ein, mit, zu, fern. In a normal sentence that prefix moves to the end.
aufstehen → Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
to get up → I get up at 7.
einkaufen → Wir kaufen im Supermarkt ein.
to shop → We shop at the supermarket.
But with a modal it stays whole:
Ich muss um 7 Uhr aufstehen.
The infinitive at the end is never split.
The imperative (giving instructions)

Exam tip: in the writing task you will almost always
need the Sie form, because you are writing to a hotel or an office:
